DANIEL WOODS – UNDERWATER PHOTOGRAPHY – FOXFURY

I’m Daniel Woods I’m an adventurer and
portrait photographer I’m an ocean addict and so I love anything to do
underwater the word for it is magic you go underwater it’s magic it’s floating
hair is just doing really cool things fabric is just doing really cool things
it’s magic it’s easy to get a water housing and jump in a swimming pool or a
body of water and take pictures and you can do amazing things with just the Sun
coming through but if you have the ability to control and shape the light
the kinds of images you can make can be even more stunning in the past
continuous lights haven’t really been strong enough for the kind of ISO
sensitivity the cameras have had and so that leaves you with strokes but then
with strobes how are you gonna fire those things underwater radio waves
don’t communicate so you can’t just hook up socket lizards another problem with
shooting underwater with strobes you’re usually only gonna get two pictures for
what I call like an up and down where they take a breath and go down and come
back up because I have to wait for the strobes to recharge so I discovered Fox
very continuous LED lighting and all of a sudden all of these images that I
wanted to make that were in my head were now in the realm of like totally doable these lights are submersible they’re
battery-powered I don’t have to run wires anywhere I can just click away the
models under she’s flowing she’s doing her thing
Bam Bam Bam Bam Bam Bam get the idea like no recharge so now I can capture
what the models give me and not have to like waste half of the beautiful poses
or the way her hair had been flowing just at the right moment the light we
that we’ve been using for the underwater portraiture is that Nomad N56 here it
is it’s compact we have six of them to top to middle water column two on the
bottom creating even side light just makes surreal looking light just like you
see on the monitor behind us these lights took away wires they took
away water issues they took away focusing issues they allow me to see
what I’m gonna get and they give me creative freedom I don’t mess with gear
as much now I just shoot it’s amazing these tools has opened up just things
that were not possible before
