How To Plan An Engagement Session | Donna Marie Photography | Ep. 1 Research & Inquiry

Oh my goodness hi I’m glad you’re here this is finally happening it’s been on my to-do list for a while! I’m so excited! My name is Donna and I’m a wedding and elopement photographer in the beautiful state of Alaska and I’m putting this series together so that you can get an idea on how to plan the best engagement session ever. So it’s
gonna walk you through the process of researching photographers all the way to
the very end when you’re getting like products and deliverables and all that
good stuff and if you’re looking for a wedding photographer too – all of this stuff
is going to apply in the same way so there might be variations here and there
but it’s all basically the same idea okay so chances are if you’re watching
this you are probably engaged and if you’re not engaged someone you know
might be engaged but either way congratulations are in order because
that’s really exciting you’re in the stages of getting wedding stuff prepared
and like in the honeymoon stages of your engagement and all that fun stuff so
let’s get this show on the road to get you full of all the info you need to
plan the best engagement session so first up you’re gonna do some
research on photographers, if you don’t already have anybody in mind then here
are some things that you should generally look for and some guidelines
to kind of keep you on track to find exactly what you’re looking for and then
also some things that kind of like help you get to know your photographer a
little bit better and their skill level so first up in that hole finding the
photographer process is looking at style so there’s a lot of different
photography styles and editing styles and every there’s everything in between
so usually bright and airy and kind of like moody or darker editing styles
there’s kind of in between editing styles but making sure that you know
stylistically what appeals to you the most is good because that’ll help you
narrow down to photographers like really really quick so depend on what
photographers are in your area and which ones you’re looking at knowing what
style you like will immediately eliminate a bunch of the contenders
because you’re gonna narrow in on exactly the style that you’re looking
for from there definitely looking at personality so go read there about me on
their website go follow them on social medias go kind of get to know them watch
their Instagram stories get a feel for who they are as a person because that
will get you to understand like if you’re gonna get to drive with them in
person if you’re gonna get along if you’re gonna like hanging out with them
because making sure you like your photographers like you’re very important
you’re gonna be spending a lot of time with them especially if they’re
photographing your wedding day like you do not want to be stuck with someone
that you don’t like or that you think is boring or too loud or any of the things
I mean someone that you enjoy being with is key so once you narrow down a style
that you like make sure that the photographer’s that you’re interested in
kind of like jive with who you are as a person
from there looking into skill level and experience is also a key factor because
you want to make sure that they know what they’re doing so there is anywhere
from amateur photographers to seasoned photographers who have been doing it for
five plus years or whatever the case may be
where whoever it is that your end up with looking at and considering making
sure that they have different things in place to kind of keep you at ease and
know that there’s like a clear like set of expectations for like deliverables in
the end basically like at any skill level contracts are always a good thing
and contracts aren’t just to protect the photographer there to protect you too so
making sure that there’s insurance is also a good thing especially for wedding
photographers in general like making sure that they’re insured have their
licenses and everything that’s a good good thing it’s a good thing anyways so
as far as like research goes style personality and then experience level
and I need all the things that come with that so how long they’ve been shooting
if they’re licensed and insured if they have contracts and plays all those
different things second up once you do find somebody that
hits all the marks and has all the things that you’re looking for it’s time
to actually reach out to them which may be kind of nerve-racking it might not be
I don’t know whatever the case may be it’s time it’s time so a lot of
photographers will make it kind of obvious how they want you to reach out
to them usually it’ll be like Instagram dm’s or on their website they’re gonna
have like various contact forms or those so it’d say email me or text me or call
me but depending on what parts of their social media your website their website
that you’re looking at will kind of guide you to where and how they want you
to contact them usually personally for me
reaching out through my contact form is the most throw away because one I know
that it’s gonna make it to my inbox no matter what and also it kind of asks a
few different questions that help me get to know you a little bit better one of
them being like do you have an Instagram because sometimes you get like a real
good feel about like who a person is if you just get to browse their Instagram a
little bit so that helps me a lot because I can
um kind of pull Loki you stalking status and gonna go browse your profiles a bit
boom but on a way less creepy levels but it just kind of helps me get to know you
as a person see what you like what you don’t like if you have pets if you don’t
have pets all the different things if you’re adventurous or if you’re more of
a homebody all of these things will help me get to know you and help me get
chewed like determine what the best way to photograph you would be or also like
what landscape or scenery or set would be the best for your photo shoot so it
helps and if you don’t have Instagram it’s not a big deal if you don’t want me
perusing your Instagram also not a big deal I won’t press the matter but all of
these little things kind of help me get to know you as a person and then also
response time this varies from photographer to photographer depending
on how busy they are the season timezones all of the things but me
personally I try to reply as fast as possible if I can if I’m at a wedding if
it’s a weekend chances are I’m probably swamped with work doing all the things
but I do not like to let it go for over 24 hours
so chances are you’re gonna hear from me relatively fast and if you don’t there
might be something wrong with the way you communicated me with me with the
that that there might be something wrong um but different photographers sometimes
they do 24 hours a week two weeks four business days three business days
whatever the case may be but usually our response time is relatively quick and if
you don’t hear back it’s okay to follow up
honestly like I promise you because sometimes technology fails and sometimes
emails don’t make it and they get lost in cyberspace so it’s okay to follow up
like if you don’t hear back from a photographer within like four or five
days I probably send a follow-up email be like hey did you get my message did
you get my email or anything like that because you never know what could have
happened on either your end or their end or sometimes I thought I messaged like
sometimes I thought I replied to a text from a friend and then I’ll go back and
I’ll be like oh never hit the send button so it could be on either end
technology does its things but that is the end of this episode for the day that
kind of goes over so I’m just going to recap I’m gonna take a breath I’m gonna
recap we went through a little bit of an introduction what the series all about
what we’re gonna be talking about throughout the series this first video
was the inquiry and research or research and inquiry process of finding a
photographer so within those within the research phase make sure that you’re
looking at style personality and skill level and experience and then in the
inquiry phase reach out usually through their website if they don’t have a
website contact form then finding their email is always a good bet and then if
you don’t hear back within a few days follow up with them it is okay and then
yeah so that is a little recap of everything that we talked about and I
hope you stay tuned and watch out for the next video it’s gonna be awesome
oh also I forgot to mention I will be pulling in other vendors for some of
these videos um such as like a stylist possibly someone for hair and makeup and
then anybody else who wants to tune in that has expertise in any of the topics
I’m going to be talking about but I don’t want to give too much away but
that’s your teaser anyways thank you so much for tuning in I can’t wait for the
next episode bye you can get sassy for me mm-hmm game plan is all you’re engaged you just
got a ring put in it put it putting it Wow
but anyways this session is all about how to plan the best engagement session
and did I just say this session oh my gosh okay so if you’re new around here
my name is Donna and I am the owner of Donna Marie photography I’m an elopement
and wedding based photographer or probably but so I’m gonna jet
